what we do
Hot Stone Massage
What is a Hot Stone Massage?
Essentially, a hot stone massage involves using heated stones.
With hot stone massage therapy, the therapist uses a special heater to heat the stones up to around 45-50°C. If you’re concerned about the heat of the hot stones, then just alert me and we can use hot and cold stones.
In massage therapy, there are always various different hot stone massage techniques. My methods are typical in the way that I’ll place the warm stones on the body in specific spots, either guided anatomically or on energy points believed to help aid balance and flow. Once the stones are in place, I’ll use the stones to perform Swedish massage techniques, such as kneading, long smooth strokes, and rolling.
Benefits of a Hot Stone Massage
Immune boosting
A hot stone massage has many benefits, one is them is that it impacts your immune system, even after just one session. Placing hot stones can do quite a lot as opposed to regular massage. These complementary therapies can also be a stress relief, ease cancer symptoms, ease sore muscles, help skin appearance, and it’s been known that your sleep improves too.
Managing chronic pain
Medical conditions can be difficult to manage – especially when they are painful conditions. However, the heat from the volcanic rock stones can alleviate pain. For those with conditions like Fibromyalgia pain, moderate pressure massage therapy has been shown to promote relaxation and tangible positive effects. Other research has shown that people with painful Rheumatoid Arthritis have also experienced less pain. That’s why as massage therapists, it’s critical that you’re very upfront and honest with your pain and muscle tension.
Draw out toxins
In the clinical practice of massage, when we relieve stress and relieve pain through a back massage or with hot water and heat, we find that it has the power to draw toxins to the surface of the skin. This happens as the body will hold heat and so the toxins are eliminated through the body’s natural sweating process. These flat stones can leave a wonderful radiant glow.
Self-care
Whether it’s to relieve tension or for muscle relaxation, either way, healthy subjects find that heat helps to balance energy flow. Although battling autoimmune diseases is important as is better circulation, sometimes we just need to care for ourselves. So, find your next massage, and prepare to relax, muscles eased, and a relief in the body.
